How can I take a year off from work to travel?

Saw an article in a men's health magazine on this last year - such travel looked quite viable... and wonderful. Wished I had saved the article. I'm an experienced special ed. teacher (behavior disorders and autism) and part-time Rolfer/Masseuse with a strong desire to experience the world.
